This advanced course builds on prerequisite medical cannabis knowledge (NURS 585 and NURS XXXa) for healthcare professionals. It shifts the focus to higher clinical competence, including the provider’s social and systemic roles, ethical responsibilities in advocacy, and navigation of the evolving cannabis industry. A core tenet is health equity, emphasizing specialized care for vulnerable and rural populations facing chronic needs, stigma, and access barriers. Learners are trained to use current, evidence-based research to develop and implement holistic, interprofessional care plans that integrate cannabis therapeutics into existing healthcare. The course supports advanced communication (motivational interviewing, health coaching, and patient education) skills for patient-centered decision-making. A critical component is to enhance learners’ social justice and advocacy skills to shape policy and regulation, analyze their impact on patient access, and promote safe, effective, and equitable medical cannabis use. The goal is to cultivate healthcare leaders who are expert clinicians and effective advocates for systemic change and patient welfare in medical cannabis.
