Catalog description

This course will provide graduate nurse practice students knowledge related to the current opioid epidemic and its effects on the rural population. A key concept explored in this course is that many people with opioid addictions also have severe and persistent mental health concerns. There is a lack of treatment and resources for both opioid and mental health issues and this course will explore treatment options, ways to increase engagement with patients and their families, significant others, and communities, as well as a focus on prevention in children, teens, and adults in the community. The following topics will be explored in this course: principles of prescribing medications for opioid use disorder with consideration of special populations including pregnant women, adolescents, and older adults, harm reduction, and other therapeutic modalities for this special population. Course fee applies. Please refer to the Schedule of Classes.
