Psych Spec I: Acute Illnesses

Credits: 4 In this course, students explore attitudes about mental health with a focus on mental health promotion, crisis intervention and prevention, and assessment and management of selected acute psychiatric conditions and emergencies in children, adolescents, adults, and older adults populations. The course includes anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, trauma-and stress-related disorders, dissociative disorders, personality disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders and other childhood disorders, feeding and eating disorders, elimination disorders, gender dysphoria and related conditions, and issues related to violence. Furthermore, the ability of current mental health services in meeting the needs of vulnerable and diverse populations is explored. Students are introduced to factors that impact the development and implementation of mental health policies and theoretical models of psychosocial interventions and research evidence are evaluated for use in practice. The clinical portion of this course requires approximately 8 hours per week for a total of 120 hours in the practice setting. Prerequisite: NURS 562 & 565. (Didactic
