Functional Role I, CNS

Nursing 550 is the first in a three semester sequence of courses designed to prepare the graduate nursing student for the clinical specialist role (CNS) in adult-gerontology nursing in diverse healthcare settings. The CNS role is structured with seven sub-roles including: direct care provision, consultation, systems of leadership, collaboration, coaching, research and ethical decision making, moral agency and advocacy. Theory related to Advanced Practice Nursing will be examined to facilitate integration of these sub-roles. This course specifically concentrates on the scope and responsibilities inherent in the direct care provider, collaborator and coaching roles. Clinical practice opportunities allow for application of knowledge and socialization to these roles. The clinical portion of this course requires 4 hours per week for a total of 60 hours in the practice setting. Prerequisite: NURS 502, NURS 518, & NURS 600. Corequisite: NURS 511 & NURS 519.
