Credits: 3 The focus of the community health nursing major is advanced nursing care of populations. This third clinical practice course builds on knowledge and skills from epidemiology, biostatistics, research, and previous clinical practice courses. Emphasis will be placed on planning, implementation, and evaluation of community and nursing strategies, which address the health status of communities and groups or aggregates at risk. Grant writing and the development and management of budgets will be discussed as they relate to the support of program development and implementation. A variety of theories, models, frameworks, and methods will be analyzed. With this theoretical background, the student will plan, implement, and evaluate plans for disease prevention and/or health promotion projects to address the community diagnoses identified in Nursing 542. Social, economic, cultural/ethnic, and political implications of interventions will be considered. Appropriate models and methods will be used to evaluate interventions for both process and outcome. Ongoing research and practice needs will be identified. Throughout the semester, the student’s role definition of advanced community health nursing practice at the master’s degree level will be evaluated and defined. The completion of this project serves as the masters’ capstone for Community Health Nursing students. The clinical portion of this course requires 4 hours per week for a total of 60 hours in the practice setting. Prerequisite: NURS 502, NURS 518, NURS 540 and NURS 600.
