Adult-Gerontological Nurs III

Catalog description

Credits: 3 This course prepares the advanced practice nursing student to manage clients with complex healthcare problems as they age across the continuum from late adulthood. Emphasis is focused on the treatment of illnesses and geriatric syndromes associated with declining functional status in the frail elder. Application of theories of aging, assessment skills, critical thinking and evidence based practice guidelines will drive treatment and evaluation of older adults with complex healthcare issues in community and long term care settings. Potential impacts of socio-cultural, ethnic and religious considerations on end of life health care decisions are examined from a life course perspective. Health care policy in long term care settings is examined. The clinical portion of this course requires approximately 8 hours per week for a total of 120 hours in the practice setting. Students may use the same site for both the role and clinical courses. Prerequisite: NURS 512/658 & NURS 554/666 (NP); or NURS 512/658 & NURS 551/617 (CNS); or NURS 512/658 & NURS 557 (EDUC).
