NURS 508
Intro to Palliative Care
Binghamton University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
NURS 508 is an introductory course to the field of palliative care. Core competencies of palliative care and associated domains of clinical practice across the lifespan will be discussed and threaded throughout the curriculum. The dynamic nature of palliative care as a relatively new medical specialty will be highlighted. Emphasis on the interprofessional aspects of palliative care and hospice will be stressed, as well as the differentiation of these two closely-related disciplines. Content will provide a foundation in the philosophical and conceptual underpinnings of palliative care, for advanced nursing practice in the role of palliative care educator, nurse researcher, clinician or administrator, across all health care settings. Concepts related to advanced chronic illness management, health care systems, continuity of care, patient rights at end of life, and the provision of “a good death” will be examined in depth. The course is based upon the Essentials of Master’s Education for Advanced Practice Nursing, the eight domains of the National Consensus Project 2018 Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties’ Core Competencies.
