Nursing 503, Scientific Inquiry: Theoretical Foundations: This course is an introduction to theoretical thinking in nursing. Methods of inquiry will be presented which are necessary for the development and expansion of the scientific body of knowledge in nursing. The class will include an overview of important issues in the philosophy of science, including ways of learning and patterns and sources of knowledge. Relationships among philosophy, values, science, theory, and research, and their effect on the structure of nursing knowledge will be discussed. Conceptual models and theories will be examined. In addition, theory in relation to the research process and as a basis for nursing practice will be explored. Students will acquaint themselves with the creation, process, and advancement of nursing theory. Offered fall and spring. Prerequisite: NURS 600, can be taken concurrently. NOTE: Students cannot register for N.503 concurrently with N.535 unless instructor permission is granted. Variable Credit. (2-
