Catalog description
A survey of the history of opera from 1600 to today. Special emphasis on the interactions of composers, librettists, producers, singers, and the public, and on the distinct musical and dramatic conventions of operas from different eras, from various European countries, and in contrasting registers from opera seria to operetta. Other topics include opera and politics, gender, exoticism, and realism, and the special kinds of meaning that emerge in sung theatre. Prerequisite MUS 301. Offered every two years.
