Theory III

Catalog description

This is the third of three courses dedicated to the study of harmonic, melodic, and formal structures in common-practice tonal music. We study modulation, modal mixture, and advanced chromaticism and enharmonicism that push tonal harmony to its limits. We also analyze larger components of musical form, including binary, ternary, imitative forms, song forms, variation, rondo, and sonata. Prerequisite: MUS 217. Corequisite: Students enrolled in MUS 315 must enroll in MUS 316 the same semester. Every fall.
