Catalog description
This course provides an exploration of the principles and mechanisms of biotransport within the context of medical science. Students will study the fundamental processes of mass, momentum, and energy transfer, and how these processes influence physiological functions from cells to circulation systems. It emphasizes the role of mechanics and transport phenomena in health and disease, examining topics such as cell membrane mechanics, adhesion, blood transport, rheology, fluid-structure interaction, and thrombosis. Students will engage with contemporary research methodologies and modeling techniques such as high-performance computing and multiscale models to analyze transport mechanisms in various biological systems. Prerequisites: ME 303 Engineering computational methods or equivalent, ME 351 Fluid mechanics or equivalent, ME 211 Intro to solid mechanics or equivalent. Offered Spring or Fall.
