Catalog description

This course will explore how energy is transported and converted via molecules, electrons, phonons, and photons. The science of these carriers has critical energy applications, including thermoelectrics, thermal batteries, light emitting diodes, and photovoltaics. Covered topics include kinetic theory, quantization of energy levels, statistical distributions, Boltzmann transport relations, and nanoscale size effects. Applications, recent advancement in the field, and experimental techniques will be discussed. ME-441 (Heat Transfer), ME-331 (Thermodynamics), or equivalent. Offered in the spring.
