Catalog description
Precision measurement and signal analysis for dynamic physical systems, integrating theory and experiment. Topics include sensing and transduction, electronic instrumentation, signal acquisition and conditioning, spectral analysis, statistical characterization of signals and noise, and random vibration analysis. Micro/nano-opto-electro-mechanical systems (M/NOEMS) are introduced as experimental platforms for precision measurement and weak-signal extraction in noise-limited environments. Detection techniques, including signal modulation and phase-sensitive detection using lock-in methods, are also introduced. Students will develop theoretical and experimental understanding of precision measurement principles and learn how measurement techniques are used to observe and quantify physical phenomena across mechanical, electrical, and optical systems. MATLAB will be used for assignments and experiments. Prerequisites: MATH 224, 225, 226, 227, 323, and 342, and ME 391, ME 421 (or their equivalents). Offered in the Spring.
