This course examines Soren Kierkegaard's fraught relation to God in a broader context of Continental philosophy. Kierkegaard's emphasis on subjectivity and the otherness of God raises many more questions than it answers. With extensive readings from Kierkegaard and selections from Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Levinas, we will attempt to grasp Kierkegaard's philosophical moment, and his influence on subsequent wrestlings with God. Throughout, we will pay close attention to the ethics implied by each perspective, asking, for example, 'what does this mean for moral obligation?'
