What are the tensions between the individual and the collective negotiated in the process of forming an identity: being educated, learning about yourself, about the world and about life, overcoming obstacles, maturing? In this class, we will explore these questions in the Israeli historical and cultural contexts, via the analysis of literary texts of the Coming-of-Age genre. We will delve into issues such as national affinities, class, ethnicity, gender and sexuality following the moral and psychological development of some touching and memorable characters in their journey of passage from childhood to adulthood.
