Learn Japanese Through Anime is an engaging English and Japanese hybrid language course that combines exploration of Japanese culture through anime with structured language instruction. Designed for beginners, this course helps students develop practical Japanese language skills while exploring the culture, traditions, and social customs of Japan. Students will watch selected anime episodes and scenes to experience authentic Japanese language and storytelling. These materials introduce real everyday expressions, communication styles, cultural values, and traditional practices. Through discussions and activities, students analyze dialogue and stories to understand how Japanese is used in real-life contexts. Alongside media-based learning, students receive instruction in vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and writing systems of Japanese language. The language lessons are taught at a more supportive and gradual pace compared to the intensive language courses, such as JPN101, to ensure strong language foundations. Practice activities reinforce concepts introduced through anime and promote steady progress in the four language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. As part of the course, students will create and deliver presentations in English exploring how Japanese culture is represented in anime, demonstrating their language skills and cultural understanding. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate in basic Japanese and demonstrate an understanding of Japanese culture in both media and everyday life while enjoying watching anime. No prerequisite. First year appropriate.
