Catalog description
Battery manufacturing and recycling is a cross-listed (graduate/undergraduate) course designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills of battery technologies for energy storage and automotive electrification, and their recycling. The course integrates fundamentals of battery technologies, battery materials, manufacturing processes, testing methods, and recycling principles and processes. Topics to be covered include (1) Introduction to battery types and functions, (2) Li-ion battery fundamentals, (3) Materials choices in Li-ion battery, (4) Li-ion battery manufacturing processes, (5) Basic technical battery characteristics, (6) Battery cell assembly, (7) Other alternative advanced battery technologies, (8) Reason for recycling and policies, (9) Hazards and safety, (10) Reuse of batteries, (11) Recyclable components and supply chain, (12) Pretreatment for battery recycling, (13) Current Recycling Technologies, and (14) Advanced Recycling Technologies. Prerequisites: Undergraduate Standing. Offered every Fall or as needed.
