Catalog description

The course covers web-based systems for storing information, indexing methods, and ways in which indices can be searched. Search methods include Boolean, statistical, inference nets, and knowledge-based models. Techniques such as query expansion will be covered, as well as natural language and linguistic methods. These topics provide a foundation for modern AI-enabled search, where relevance can be improved using learned models and language understanding. Efficient information retrieval can often be performed in a distributed fashion, with a variety of cloud service providers supporting multiple methods. Prerequisites: INFO 501 and INFO 502, either or both may be taken concurrently. Offered at least once every academic year.
