HIST 501P - Migration and Citizenship Professor Wendy Wall Fall 2026 Course Description: This graduate seminar will introduce students to key themes and issues in the rapidly evolving fields of im/migration and citizenship, focusing primarily on the modern United States. While this course is necessarily selective, we will explore issues like the following: the causes of immigration and American attitudes and policies towards migrants; the social, cultural, and economic adaptation of different immigrant groups; and the ever-changing boundaries, content, and politics of citizenship. We will look at the effect of race, ethnicity, religion, gender and sexuality on these intertwined issues, as well as the impact of war, social movements, and globalization. While most course materials will be drawn from U.S. historiography, the readings will include some theoretical, trans-national, and comparative studies.
