This seminar explores the making of Soviet culture, placing particular focus on the interplay between ideology, practice, and the everyday people and places of the Soviet Union. Course topics include competing assessments of the Soviet state’s multinational structure, causes and implications of the violence of the Stalin period, the impact of World War Two, the environmental and human impacts of Soviet industrialization, and debates over the reasons for the system’s demise.
