This course examines the political writings from a singularly tumultuous period in European history. The course begins with the radical and radicalizing thought of Machiavelli and with the Protestant Reformation’s upending of traditional interpretations of issues ranging from the source and nature of political authority, to the rights and responsibilities of the ruled, and to the relationship between states. Readings are all primary sources. Offered every 6-8 semesters.
