Race&Religion in Premod Europe

Catalog description

This course examines the ways in which Christians, Jews, and Muslims constructed notions of identity and categories of difference around the categories “race” and “religion” in premodern Europe and beyond. These and other questions will be examined in a comparative manner, by considering similar processes in Dar al-Islam, in Latin Christendom, and in the Atlantic world of early-modern European exploration. Readings will include primary sources and secondary scholarship. Offered every 6-8 semesters.
