Beer in Early-Modern Europe

This course offers a view of early-modern Europe from the perspective of the pint glass. We begin with an overview of the history of beer production, the brewing profession, and regulatory oversight. We explore beer’s place in the cultural life of town and village; the impact of gender norms and the preoccupations of clerical and political elites on production and consumption. Finally, we will see how a consideration of beer offers insight into international trade and environmental history. Offered every 6-8 semesters.
