This course examines the social organization and cultural construction of gender and sexuality in modern Europe. It will consider both femininity and masculinity as it was constructed and experienced, and explore research methodologies for assessing gender as a subject for historical inquiry. Topics include: revolutionary definitions of citizenship; the gender of nationalism; how gender articulated with the politics of war, fascism, imperialism, and communism; the construction of normativity and deviance, production, reproduction, and waged labor; “sexual revolutions”; and debates on gender and sexuality in postcolonial Europe.
