For much of the last one hundred years, Israel's relations with its Arab neighbors have captured global attention. While much of this focus rightly concentrates on Israeli-Palestinian relations, much of Israeli history centers on how Israel navigated challenges and opportunities with neighboring Arab states, notably Egypt, Jordan, and Syria among many others. This course adopted a holistic approach to exploring Arab-Israeli relations, examining areas of conflict, opportunities for peacemaking, and how interactions with Arab culture have impacted Israeli society. Topics and themes for this course include visions for a Jewish state in the Arab world prior to 1948; Arab Jews and their role in the Arab-Israeli Conflict; and Israel's wars with Arab states, including the wars of 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973, as well as several border conflicts between Israel, Egypt and Jordan. Finally, this course will consider various peacemaking initiatives between Israel and neighboring Arab states. While this course will examine Palestinian perspectives of this history, the course content will be driven by Israel's relations with neighboring Arab states.
