Sex in American History

Catalog description

Sexual attitudes, desires, behaviors, communities, movements and identities have undergone profound transformations in American history. We will explore these developments and changes in the history of sexuality over the last four hundred years, and examine the relationship between sexuality and class, ethnicity, gender identity, race, and religion; and the ways in which the study of sexuality offers opportunities to re-think major themes in U.S. social, cultural, and political history. The goal is to understand factors that shaped sexual lives, including customs and taboos, law, religion, medical expertise, and state policies.
