The Greek World

Catalog description

This course examines the formation of Greek civilization (especially its Classical and Hellenistic periods), the social and economic factors that underpinned it, and the cultural and intellectual narratives that shaped its ideological perspectives. It will also explore how certain Greeks have defined self-hood through their encounters with foreign peoples in ways that have shaped modern concepts of the “West” and “East.” Key areas of focus are: Greek political systems, law, family, class, gender, slavery, and encounters with non-Greek peoples.
