HIST 180A - Mapping American Prejudice Professor Wendy Wall Fall 2023 Course Description: This course explores the changing parameters of racial, religious, and ethnic prejudice, as well as the ways both private actions and public policy embed discrimination in the landscape around us. Focusing on Broome County (where Binghamton University is located), students will research topics ranging from the anti-Jewish and anti-Catholic activities of the KKK in the early 1920s to the widespread use of racially restrictive covenants and & "redlining" in later decades. We will analyze the ways that historical racism continues to shape lives, even after overt expressions of intolerance fade. Finally, we'll explore how public-facing history can begin to redress both structural racism and individual prejudice by sparking civic dialogue.
