HIST 103A - Foundations of America Professor Robert Parkinson Fall 2025 Course Description: Examines the development of American society and political institutions from the 17th century to the Civil War. Special attention will be paid to the interaction of Native American, European, and African peoples. Examines the development of colonial polities, the institutionalization of slavery, the displacement of Native Americans and the role these changes played in the creation and development of the United States. Places the founding of the United States in the middle of the term, thereby giving the greatest context to understand its history and impact. Readings and lectures reflect the experiences of different peoples in America and approach these experiences from a variety of methodological perspectives. Satisfies both history and philosophy, politics and law major. Format: Two lectures and one discussion section.
