Catalog description
This course will provide a survey of theories, historical studies, and debates on gentrification. We will first examine popular conceptualizations of gentrification. Students will learn about the application of the “revanchist” model of gentrification. We will then examine research studies that focus on new forms of gentrification around the world. The course aims to understand the roles of race and racism in the organization of gentrification on a global scale. In the context of the climate crisis, we will focus on environmental gentrification and how it affects working-class communities. Offered: semester offered varies.
