Catalog description

Although gay marriage recently passed in the U.S., nearly half of countries around the world still criminalize homosexuality. In many countries, being gay can result in prison or death. This course will provide a general survey of the policy oriented issues related to sexual minorities in varying environments around the world. Although this course heavily focuses on the rights of LGBTQ individuals, many topics can relate to other groups and political issues. Students will grasp a better understanding of the contention between government policies and respect for human dignity, forms of oppression, and universal human rights. At the end of this course, students will be able to better communicate the social and political implications of both the criminalization and policy advancements for LGBTQ minorities. Offered summer/winter.
