HDEV 310, Human Rights and War on Terror: Since the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks, the world has been reshaped by the U.S.-led War on Terror, which has expanded to involve dozens of states across the globe. Many counter-terrorism policies adopted since 9/11 have had dramatic negative consequences for human rights, ranging from increased surveillance and privacy violations to unlawful detentions and increased physical integrity abuses. In this course, students will be exposed to an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the impact of counter-terrorism on human rights, incorporating contemporary political analyses, law, journalism, and personal accounts/memoirs. Offered summer/winter.
