Catalog description

This course is about fairness in sport, physical activity, physical culture and health. It is about the right and capability to participate, and the way that those are differentially distributed in the population. The capability to participate in sport and recreational physical activity is profoundly affected by the social structures of society and by persistent inequalities. An increasing number of institutions in physical and health education have now committed themselves to policies of social equity which can lead to positive health outcomes. This course enables students to study the effects of class, gender, race, sexuality, and other aspects of social inequality upon opportunities, programs and practices. The role of physical culture in reproducing or transforming those social inequalities and the means by which social equity might be more effectively pursued are considered throughout the course. Restriction: no freshman. Offered regularly in fall.
