This interdisciplinary course is an introduction to approaches and critical concepts used to theorize and investigate the relationships between humans, the environment and health through an intersectional framework both locally and transnationally. A key focus is on the politics of power/knowledge at the intersection of environmental discourses and various axis of difference (gender, race, class, ability, sexuality etc.) Drawing on both historical and contemporary material, we will consider the ways environmental (in)justice has operated through neoliberalism, capitalism, biopiracy and the media which affects marginalized communities `glocally?. Using an intersectional analysis, we will examine how local and global economies shape the environment in ways that impact on citizenship, labour, reproduction and other rights-based issues. Class lectures will be supplemented by films and guest speakers. Restriction: No freshman. Offered once a year in spring.
