Why does it seem so easy to learn your first language, and so much harder to learn languages later on? This course examines prominent theories of second language acquisition in comparison to first language acquisition, and how these theories have shaped approaches to teaching languages in classroom environments. We will discuss the acquisition of various linguistic aspects (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation), the role of individual learner differences (age, motivation, aptitude), and the implications for language teaching. Students will reflect on their own experiences, revisit popular ideas about language learning, and explore effective strategies for second language learning and teaching in adulthood. No Freshman.
