Modern Germany Through Film

Catalog description

In this course, we will be watching some of the most important films from the silent era to the 21st century, and learning about how their historical contexts, from the Weimar Republic of the 1920s to the present-day Berlin Republic, shape these films and are reflected in them. We will watch and discuss one film each week; readings will introduce the basics of both film history and German history of the periods covered. This course will target the four basic areas of your German language proficiency (speaking, listening, reading, and writing. German is the language of instruction. Prerequisite: GEM 204, equivalent or permission of instructor. Offered every other year.
