Quantitative Methods

Catalog description

An in-depth survey of the principles and techniques of quantitative spatial data analysis in geographic research. Topics include data measurement, data types, selection of appropriate statistical analysis methods, data visualization/presentation techniques, analysis and interpretation of statistical analysis results. Students will develop a conceptual understanding of how measurements of geographical phenomena are organized as data, summarized and analyzed to produce information, interpreted to acquire knowledge, and linked with other knowledge to develop an understanding of the world. Theoretical discussions in class will be supplemented with assignments using statistical and GIS software. Open to geography graduate students (and graduate students from closely related fields of study with instructor permission). Prerequisite: introductory course in statistics.
