Are we what we eat? Our relationship to food is indeed closely tied to many aspects of our identity, including ethnicity, social class, and gender. In this course, we will read 20th and 21st century culinary fiction by a number of well-known Francophone writers and watch films by two influential Francophone directors in order to consider questions of assimilation, marginalization, and cultural imperialism. We will also contemplate cooking as a means of creative expression and social influence, especially for women. Works studied come from the Caribbean, West Africa, Europe, and the French-speaking islands of the Indian Ocean. Entirely in French. Prerequisite: one 300-level FREN course or permission of instructor
