More than a swamp, the Everglades is valued for biodiversity, economic benefits, and ecosystem services. Its eight major, interconnected ecosystems are surrounded by vast farmlands and intense urban development. The Everglades serves as an endangered species habitat, provides drinking water for millions of Floridians, and is the only place on Earth designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, International Biosphere Reserve, Wetlands of International Importance, and national park. Students spend about ten days in the field in Everglades National Park camping and learning about the region’s ecosystem and exploring the complex environmental issues from natural, social, and economic perspectives. No freshman permitted. Course fee applies. Refer to the schedule of classes. Offered winter only.
