Catalog description

The course connects environmental chemistry with our community’s drinking water and wastewater treatment systems. Lectures focus on chemical processes occurring during treatment and how regulations protect water quality. To understand water chemistry and quality, students will collect water samples from Binghamton University’s Nature Preserve as well as visits to local wastewater and drinking water treatment plants. students will measure water quality in the field and conduct organic analysis on the water in the laboratory and will compare your water quality analyses to water regulations and make conclusions of the effectiveness of the regulations and areas for improvement. Prerequisite: ENVI 140, or one semester of college chemistry with a lab, or ENVI 201. Offered spring only.
