ENG 562A Literatures of the African Diaspora - This course considers the ways in which literature, broadly defined, has shaped the development of African diaspora studies across space and time. In particular, students will evaluate the aesthetic, political, and cultural questions that these writers bring to the fore for the past, present, and future of literary study. How have contemporary literary and cultural critics engaged in reading the African diaspora? How can we grapple with the tensions and affordances of diaspora within criticism? What methodologies of reading have emerged in African diaspora studies? We will consider a range of writers, mediums, and critics who traverse spaces, including but not limited to the Caribbean, North America, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.
