Animal Studies

This transdisciplinary course teaches reading, comprehension, research, and writing across disciplines. Situated in the Environmental Humanities, it introduces students to Animal Studies, which considers the human/animal relationship from the perspective of biology, affective neuroscience, literature, environmental studies and bioanthropology. Building on environmental philosophy, we look at animals as morally considerable species that exist on a relational continuum with humans and the natural world, the ethical questions this continuum raises, and the connections the moral considerability of animals has to larger issues of environmental and social justice. Students in the humanities do not need a scientific background to take this course. Restriction: No freshman permitted. Offered regularly.
