This course studies the works of major nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American Romantic writers. Students will learn what it means to think, write, and live as a Romantic, as we read and discuss Emerson’s “Nature,” Hawthorne’s and Poe’s short stories, Moby-Dick, Dickinson’s poems, The Turn of the Screw, and Look Homeward, Angel. Grade will be based on two response papers and two exams. Offered regularly.
