What made the years between 1500 and 1700 a "golden age" for drama in England and Spain? In this seminar, we'll read plays by Shakespeare and Cervantes, Lope de Vega and Kyd, Calderon and Jonson. We'll compare the development of dramatic genres, stagecraft, performance spaces, and playgoing cultures in the English and Spanish contexts. In the last weeks, we'll turn to The Cardenio Project and related attempts to recover Shakespeare's lost play based on Don Quixote. All readings will be available in both English and Spanish.
