Transnationalism and Film

Catalog description

The course begins with the assumption that national cinemas do not exist in isolation. Rather, the transnational circulation of aesthetics and filmmakers as well as a global film economy shape national cinemas. We will track the complex and unequal network of technological, economic, and artistic exchanges that have taken place amongst various film industries. Furthermore, we will explore how states and corporations have regulated these exchanges. Topics covered include anti-colonialism and cinema; nations & national cinemas; transnational action; remakes; states, borders, and refugees; gender off, on, and behind screens; authorship; paratexts; diaspora; cinephilia; and film piracy. Offered regularly.
