ENG 320-01 Globalization & Literary Culture - This course will look at literary works and films that attempt to represent the global-- as an exchange, an encounter, a relation of exploitation and struggle against it, etc. We will read literary texts and films alongside a number of essays which seek to theorize globalization. Our task will be to connect the role of narratives and representation to broader debates about capitalism, transnational culture, immigration, international feminism, colonialism, and postcolonialism. Along with scholars and critics, we will try to identify and analyze the narrative strategies through which political, cultural, and historical events are represented. We will also explore how processes that go under the rubric of 'globalization' are transforming the production, distribution and consumption of cultural objects.
