Catalog description

The region known as the French Caribbean includes the world’s first Black independent nation, Haiti, the islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin, and the South American territory of French Guiana. This course will look at French Caribbean novels, poetry, films, and essays, all in English translation, which we’ll discuss as we consider questions of national identity, citizenship, race, enslavement, and colonialism in the French Caribbean. Offered regularly.
