The Global Novel

How do we think about the global? This is the animating question for this course. We will explore the ways in which global issues-imperialism, disaster, finance, climate, and migration among others-shape novels even as they are firmly situated in the local. At the same time, we will explore how novels offer literary meditations on a series of important questions: how does the global destroy and/or alter the local? How do global flows, for instance, global flows of finance, affect the self, family structures, and gender relations? How does climate change fundamentally alter human and non-human dynamics?
