ENG 300T Comics - This course will cover comics in terms of both form and content, with a focus on developments in comics since 1986. That year saw the publication of three major works of comics art that changed the way people thought about comics in the U.S.: Watchmen (Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons), The Dark Knight Returns (Frank Miller) and Maus (Art Spiegelman). After starting the course by considering the formal challenges of both making and reading comics, we will look at comics in three main thematic areas: Superhero comics, comics memoirs, and independent/alternative comics. We will draw every day, and keep a notebook, and basically treat the classroom like part playroom, part lab. Readings include the above-mentioned books as well as All-Star Superman (Grant Morrison/Frank Quitely), Fun Home (Alison Bechdel), Hot Comb (Ebony Flowers), One! Hundred! Demons! (Lynda Barry), Everything is Flammable (Gabrielle Bell), The Love Bunglers (Xaime Hernandez), Shortcomings (Adrian Tomine), and My Favorite Thing is Monsters (Emil Ferris)
