ENG 300A Native Orality and TikTok - TikTok has become America's favorite pastime. Having amassed nearly 3.1 million hashtag hits, #NativeTikTok has evolved into a vast online community, transcending international, tribal, and language borders. In this course, we will explore how various Native American creators utilize TikTok to spread culture, foster connections, and fight back against historicization. The digital space allows room for existence that is not hindered by borders or distance. We will venture into the borderless digital realm to explore what we can learn from short-form video through the application of theories of decolonization, media studies, and Indigenous epistemologies. How is social media used for cultural presentation and education? What are the benefits of such platforms? How do these non-famous digital creators discuss common stereotypes, disrupted histories, and cultures? Why is TikTok such a powerful tool for learning?
